What is sanforized cotton bedding? What means sanforizing cotton?

Sanforized cotton bedding example product label

The term “Sanforized cotton bedding” called also anti-shrinkage finishing process means that the fabric (cotton) from which the bedding was made was treat shrinkage process in order to reduce its longitudinal and transverse stretch. The Sanforizing process is extremely important as it improves the functional properties of finished products made of fabric treated. In consequence bed linen and bedding sets do not shrink and do not change size during production, use and regular daily maintenance (washing and ironing).

Sanforization – thermal treatment processing of cotton fabrics is aimed at pre-shrinking the fabric, improving its tensile properties, leveling, stabilizing and giving the fabric fibers the final resistance to shrinkage at temperature changes. The name of the process comes from the name of the American inventor Sanford Lockwood Cluett, who patented the process in the 30’s of the XX century. Sanforization is one of the most important processes during cotton fabrics production. Fabrics after sanforization process retain their dimensions, do not shrink during production and confectioning as well as during the daily use and maintenance of clothing and bed linen. Nowadays, in the case of cotton fabrics intended for the production of bedding, the Sanforized process is a common stage of its preparation. The designation on the packaging or labels “Sanforized cotton bedding” is for marketing purposes only. Regardless of whether the bedding package contains information whether the bedding is made of sanitary or not, we can be sure that the fabrics used for its production have undergone a sanoforisation process at the stage of their production.
